HC Deb 17 January 1986 vol 89 c711W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage change there has been in class sizes in the period since 1975 in all types of schools.

Mr. Dunn

The average size of class as taught by all teachers in maintained primary schools in England has decreased by 8.4 per cent. between January 1977—the earliest date for which this information is available—and January 1985. Between January 1975 and January 1985, the corresponding average size of class for secondary schools decreased by 5.7 per cent.

Information about class sizes in nursery, special and independent schools is not collected centrally.
