HC Deb 26 February 1986 vol 92 cc563-4W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what records will be kept by the police when personal data is disclosed to them via the non-disclosure provisions of the Data Protection Act; and what written statement will be sent to the data user by the police to show that the disclosure of personal date was by that route.

Mr. Giles Shaw

A working party of the Association of Chief Police Officers is currently considering this and other aspects of the Data Protection Act as it applies to police records with a view to issuing guidance to forces before the provisions of the Act come into force.

Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the replacement strategy and plans for the police national computer and the Metropolitan "C" department computer.

Mr. Giles Shaw

The police national computer mainframe hardware will have completed 10 years of continuous service by 1988, but final decisions have not yet been taken as to its replacement. The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis informs me that he has no immediate plans to replace the Metropolitan police "C" department computer, but that he intends to renew some items of hardware to ensure that the system remains fully operational.
