HC Deb 26 February 1986 vol 92 cc589-90W
Mr. Campbell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state, with reference to markers recruited for Scottish Certificate of Education examinations, in what exceptional circumstances a marker will be excused attendance at a meeting on a Saturday to discuss policy.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The Scottish Examination Board has informed me that it will consider waiving the normal requirement of compulsory attendance at markers' meetings arranged for a Saturday where the marker has a previous specific and unbreakable commitment on the date fixed for the meeting. In any event, every marker receives written instructions and, where a marker is unable to attend a meeting, these are supplemented as required.

Mr. Campbell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state the cost in 1985 for advertising for and recruiting markers for the Scottish Certificate of Education examinations (a) in Scotland, (b) in other areas of the United Kingdom and (c) elsewhere.

Mr. Allan Stewart

I have asked the Scottish Examination Board to write to the Member with this information as soon as possible.
