asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on the trend in road traffic accident casualties.

Information about the number of road casualties in recent years is shown in table 5 of "Road Accidents Great Britain". A copy is in the Library.

There were 5,599 deaths in 1984, 3 per cent. higher than in 1983, but 19 per cent. below the 1974 figure.

In the first nine months of 1985, deaths were 10 per cent. lower than in the first nine months of 1984. If this trend is continued through the fourth quarter of 1985, the number of road accident deaths in 1985 will be the lowest recorded since 1954.
