HC Deb 20 February 1986 vol 92 c310W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the hospitals which have been closed down in each health authority during the last seven years and those which are scheduled for closure in each health authority during the next year.

Mr. Hayhoe

For hospitals approved for complete closure between May 1979 and 31 March 1985 I refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Oldham, West (Mr. Meacher) by my predecessor on 20 May 1985 at columns317–29.

The total number of hospitals approved for complete closure between 1 April and 30 June 1985, the latest period for which information is available, is seven.

Details of the individual hospitals are as follows:

member state can obtain immediately necessary medical care, or in certain closely defined circumstances, other medical care, when visiting, or retiring to, another member state on the same terms as the insured nationals of that member state. These arrangements now extend to Spain and Portugal. Information about entitlement to free, or reduced cost, medical treatment abroad is set out in leaflet SA30, available from local offices of the Department.

There are wide variations in the funding and organisation of the state health care schemes of member states, nearly all of which involve some charges to the user. I am not aware of any plans to integrate these schemes or to provide treatment on a free and uniform basis throughout the Community.
