HC Deb 20 February 1986 vol 92 cc315-6W
Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what estimate he has of the number of people who died from cold-related diseases in England in each year since 1979.

Mr. Whitney

The table shows the numbers of deaths with a mention of hypothermia on the death certificate, regardless of whether it did or did not appear as the underlying cause of death, for England from 1979 to 1985.

Deaths with mention of hypothermia, all ages, persons Area of usual residence: England 1979–85

1979 789
1980 555
1981 628
1982 611
1983 508
1984 516

Many causes of death are cold-related in that the number of deaths from them increases in winter; hypothermia is the only cause that can be directly identified as a cold-related disease from mortality statistics.
