§ Mr. Leightonasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the chief constable of Hampshire as to the circumstances in which two coaches of print workers were stopped by officers of the force on the way to Eastleigh on 13 February and as to the sources of the information on which they acted in arranging this stop; and if he will make a statement on the substance of the report.
§ Mr. Giles ShawI understand from the chief constable that on 13 February his officers stopped two parties of print workers on the A33 at Compton, 4 to 5 miles from Eastleigh. They asked the travellers not to continue their journey as they feared a breach of the peace. The coach drivers and some of the passengers agreed; the remainder made their way to Eastleigh by other means. Six arrests were made at Eastleigh that day, including charges for breach of the peace and criminal damage. It is not police practice to identify sources of information in circumstances such as these.
