HL Deb 18 February 1986 vol 471 cc611-2WA
Baroness Nicol

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will state the total cost of constructing the Swanley to Sevenoaks section of the M.25 Motorway, at current prices, and the total cost of all environmental work for this section indicating separately the cost of tree planting (both on and off-site), extra land required for disposal of surplus material, the extra cost of disposing of the latter for environmental reasons and any other environmental expenditure incurred.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

The tender price for the contract was about £39 million. Allowing for remeasurement of materials used, adjustment to current prices, site supervision and the cost of moving public utilities' services (all still to be finalised) the total is likely to be about £50 million. This included the following items undertaken for environmental reasons:—

Lowering of the road and use of surplus material for landscaping £6 million
Additional cost of providing a bridge over Shacklands Road £1 million
Resiting drainage lagoon £½ million
Tree planting: on site £180,000
off-site £25,000
Noise fences £8,000

It is not the department's practice to disclose details of monetary settlements with landowners in connection with land acquired for road works.
