HC Deb 04 February 1986 vol 91 cc110-1W
26. Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the current level of student grants.

100. Mr. Beaumont-Dark

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what recent representations he has received about the level of student grants; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Walden

I refer the hon. Members to the reply I gave earlier today to the hon. Member for Denton and Reddish (Mr. Bennett).

30. Mr. Ashdown

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he last met the National Union of Students to discuss student financial support.

Mr. Walden

My right hon. Friend last met NUS representatives to discuss student financial support on 3 December 1984. My predecessor, my hon. Friend the Member for the City of London Westminster, South (Mr. Brooke), last met NUS representatives on 12 November 1985.

31. Mr. Wallace

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science on what basis the additional grant for students studying in London is calculated.

Mr. Walden

The London rate of grant reflects the higher costs associated with living in London.

Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what calculation he intends to make, when determining the level of student grants, to take account of community charges; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Walden

Decisions have not yet been taken on whether and how students should be compensated for any community charge payable by them.
