HC Deb 04 February 1986 vol 91 cc115-6W
72. Mr. Watts

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will introduce legislation to provide for the representation of commerce and industry on school governing bodies.

Mr. Dunn

The Government accept that representatives of industry and commerce can make a valuable contribution to the work of school governing bodies. The forthcoming legislation on school government will not, however, make explicit provision for such representation. This may often be provided indirectly through the ordinary election and appointment of governors. Additionally, governing bodies will be urged to use their proposed new duty to co-opt additional governors to secure such wider representation as they consider appropriate.
