Help and treatment to people wishing to give up smoking are generally offered as an integral part of the service provided by health authorities and general practitioners and are not separately costed. Many smokers stop of their own volition and without medical help. In 1985–86 the Health Education Council spent some £2 million on anti-smoking measures, and in addition the Government have provided £1 million for a pilot media campaign to help persuade young people not to smoke.
