HC Deb 03 February 1986 vol 91 cc83-4W
Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much money was spent in the last calendar year for which figures are available on curing people addicted to drug taking; and if he will give a breakdown of that figure.

Mr. Whitney

Information is not available in the form requested. The cost of treatment provided for drug misusers by the family practitioner and general psychiatric and other hospital services is not separately identified. £1,878,650 was made available from central funds in 1984–85 for pump priming services for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug misusers.

Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much money was spent on research programmes on drug taking in the last calendar year for which figures are available.

Mr. Whitney

The estimated expenditure on research into drug misuse by the Department during 1985–86 is £160,000.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of the £5 million which he has promised to provide for drugs misuse services he has allocated to the Wolverhampton health authority.

Mr. Whitney

It will be for the West Midlands regional health authority to decide on the allocation to Wolverhampton health authority from its share of the additional £5 million which is being made available for the research into the effectiveness of different treatment methods to help people stop smoking, and in addition some £100,000 in researching ways of discouraging young people from smoking. The Health Education Council has allocated about £150,000 to research in this field.

Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many deaths were recorded from diseases normally associated with tobacco smoking in the last calendar year for which figures are available.

Mr. Whitney

I refer the right hon. Member to my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Norfolk, North-West (Mr. Bellingham) on 16 December at columns73–74. The tables show the corresponding figures for England and Wales for 1984, the latest available calendar year.

Research into drug misuse is also funded by the Medical Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Health Education Council, the Home Office and, under the urban programme, by the Department of the Environment.

Evaluations of services being provided under the Department's drugs initiative are undertaken by the health and local authorities and voluntary organisations concerned, but the cost is not separately identifiable.

Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many deaths were recorded as due to drug taking in the last calendar year for which figures are available.

Mr. Whitney

The table shows the number of deaths registered in England and Wales in 1984 (the latest available calendar year) where the underlying cause of death was stated as drug dependence or non-depenent abuse of drugs (excluding alcohol and tobacco).
