asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how much financial assistance was given to tobacco companies under the various industry Acts in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively, in the last calendar year for which figures are available.

The following assistance has been provided under the Industrial Development Act 1982 (as amended) to tobacco companies in England, Scotland and Wales in the calendar year to 31 December 1985REGIONAL SELECTIVE ASSISTANCE Section 7 Total payments made £225,000. (Scotland £200,000 and Wales £25,000. No payments were made to tobacco companies in England.) Section 8 No payments made. NEW REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANTS Payments made £99,000.

The assistance was all in grant form. Details of payments of new regional development grants are confidential between the applicants and the Department. The Department does, however, however, publish quarterly in British Business list of companies which have received one or more payments of new RDG, which cumulatively amount to more than £25,000 in the quarter. No such payments have yet been published in respect of the tobacco industry.
