HC Deb 03 February 1986 vol 91 c45W
45. Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the total tonnage of coal transported by road in 1983; what volume he anticipates will be so moved in the current year; and if he has assessed the effect of such transportation on local communities and roads.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

An estimated 71 million tonnes of coal and coke were transported by road in Great Britain in 1983. The Department's forecasts of freight movements are not made on the basis of individual years or commodities. Local highway authorities are responsible for assessing the effects of traffic on their roads and taking appropriate action.
