HC Deb 03 February 1986 vol 91 cc54-5W
Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his Department's estimate of the number of people in (a) Edinburgh, (b) Glasgow and (c) Scotland as a whole who are infected by the acquired immune deficiency syndrome virus.

Mr. John MacKay

In the present state of knowledge it is not possible to give a reliable estimate of these numbers.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is satisfied that post-mortems will be carried out where necessary in sudden death cases in cases where the acquired immune deficiency syndrome virus has been detected following a blood test.

Mr. John MacKay

Yes.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what action is being taken by his Department to prevent the further spread of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome virus in Scotland amongst those groups who are most at risk.

Mr. John MacKay

Groups known to be at high risk of this disease are being advised of the steps they should take to reduce the risk; and funds amounting to £537,500 have been committed to check the spread of the disease and to support research in this field.
