HC Deb 19 December 1986 vol 107 cc786-7W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether, pursuant to his answer of Friday 5 December, Official Report, column 819, expenditure on hospital building maintenance is sub-divided in any way in the health authority's accounts.

Mrs. Currie

No. The annual accounts of health authorities show only the total expenditure on building maintenance under each main service heading (hospital services, community health services, ambulance services, etc.). However, in addition to this functional analysis the accounts include a subjective analysis by type of expenditure. This provides an alternative breakdown of health authorities' total revenue expenditure of which some categories relate directly to building maintenance—for example 'salaries and wages—building trade operatives'—building maintenance equipment and materials' and building maintenance external contracts'. The Department's annual booklets "Health Authorities' Annual Accounts—National Summary (England)" show all the figures for both analyses. Copies of the booklets for the years up to 1984–85 are held in the Library and that for 1985–86 will be placed there as soon as it is available.
