§ Mr. Wilsonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will provide details, in respect of Her Majesty's inspectorate in Scotland, of the average age of inspectors, the number of men and women, the average age of actual retirement, how many have received some form of award for redundancy, or premature retirement or sickness, the average amount of these awards, the size of the inspectorate by years since the Rayner report and the current pay scales.

- 1. the average age is 49;
- 2. there are 101 men and 12 women;
- 3. over a period of 10 years, a period for which information is readily available, the average age of retirement for all reasons has been 59; the average age of retirement on age grounds has been 61;
- 4. over the same period 12 inspectors received premature or medical retirement awards;
- 5. the average amount of these 12 awards at the date of retirement was:
- retirement pension, £7,830
- retirement lump sum, £17,517
- compensation lump sum (when applicable) £6,576
