asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many people are employed in the Firearms Department of the Metropolitan Police; how many of these are employed in granting the renewal and variation of all types of firearm and shotgun certificates; and what was their wage bill in the year 1985–86.

Twenty-one civilian staff were employed in the Firearms Branch of the Metropolitan Police during the financial year 1985–86. Twenty of these were involved in the granting, renewing or variation of firearm and shotgun certificates; they were paid £168,995. A number of police officers also undertook tasks related to the firearm and shotgun certificate system as part of their general duties.
