HC Deb 16 December 1986 vol 107 c523W
75. Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Paymaster General if he has any plans to announce new measures for the reduction of unemployment in the north of England and Cumbria.

Mr. Lee

The main impact of unemployment must come from employers and those who decide to work for themselves, through their drive towards competitiveness and greater flexibility. Greater moderation in wage settlements will also help to provide more jobs. Our economic strategy is creating the enterprising economy necessary for the sustained growth needed to maintain rising employment. However, we are continually looking at ways of reducing unemployment. The Department of Employment and the Manpower Services Commission have introduced a variety of new and enhanced measures this year throughout the country. The latest initiative, the job training scheme, is currently being piloted in Preston and Billingham as well as seven other locations in the country.
