Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) in how many cases of British citizens being killed or injured whilst travelling or visiting Spain, the Canary Islands, Tenerife or other Spanish territories over the last seven years, inquiries are still being conducted by the Spanish authorities; and if he will give the date of each death or injury suffered;

(2) what information he has as to how many British tourists have died or suffered permanent physical injury as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning or similar side effects from gas poisoning whilst travelling in Spain, the Canary Islands, Tenerife and Spanish territories over the past seven years;

(3) what information he has as to how many British tourists have been positively identified to have suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning whilst travelling in Spain, the Canary Islands, Tenerife and Spanish territories in each of the last seven years;

(4) how many British tourists died whilst travelling or holidaying in Spain, the Canary Islands, Tenerife and Spanish territories in each of the past seven years.

The figures and information in the form requested is not readily available and could be provided only at disproportionate cost. The available information, as reported by consular posts, is:

1985 Deaths of British tourists in the relevant areas: 102, of which two were from carbon monoxide poisoning. One British tourist suffered severe physical injury as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

1986 (To date) Deaths of British tourists in relevant areas: 147, of which one was due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
