Mr. Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what guidance is given to Her Majesty's inspectors about correct procedures and recommended approaches for inspections of colleges and schools; and whether this guidance is disclosed to staff selected for inspection.

Mr. John MacKay

Her Majesty's senior chief inspector lays down guidance on the approach to inspection and reporting to be followed in the planning and implementation of all programmes of inspection. Appropriate advice is communicated as a matter of course to management teams in schools and colleges, which are responsible for briefing staff.
