HC Deb 12 December 1986 vol 107 cc261-2W
Mr. Sims

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what representations Her Majesty's Government are making to the Greek Government in respect of the value added tax scheme they are introducing on 1 January relating to alcoholic beverages.

Mr. Alan Clark

The Government have made firm representations to the Greek authorities about the different rates of value added tax to be applied with effect from I January 1987 to certain alcoholic beverages. We have also drawn the European Commission's attention to our concerns that the proposed rates discriminate against imported spirits and may contravene Community law. The Commission is at our request actively pursuing this issue with the Greek Government.
