Mr. Jack Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will seek from the Electricity Council its revised assessment of the demand for electricity in the medium term and place a copy in the Library.

Mr. Goodlad

I refer to my answer to the hon. Member for Yeovil on 11 December.

Mr. Ashdown

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will state the latest Electricity Council (a) mediurnterm forecast of demand and (b) long-term forecast of demand; and if he will place copies in the Library.

Mr. Goodlad

The medium and long-term demand forecasts adopted by the Electricity Council in October are as follows:

Year Unit requirement on the CEGB (terawatt hours) Unrestricted maximum demand (gigawatts)
1992/93 260.0 50.4
1995–96 271.3 52.4

The Electricity Council may review and if necessary revise these estimates before the 1987 medium term development plan is finalised.
