HC Deb 12 December 1986 vol 107 cc306-7W
Mr. Shersby

asked the Secretary of State for Defence, whether the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has been consulted on the interoperability and mutual support aspects of Nimrod and E-3 AWACS, respectively; what weight these factors will be given in the selection of an early warning system; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

The possibilities for collaboration in support of a United Kingdom E-3A fleet have been discussed with the NATO authorities. Either system would be fitted with the communication links necessary to ensure full interoperability.

Mr. Shersby

asked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) if he will make it his policy in selecting an early warning system, to give the highest priority to operational capability; and if he will make a statement;

(2) if he will take into account when selecting an airborne early warning system the relative potential for subsequent export orders for United Kingdom industry of the two competing systems; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply that I gave the hon. Member for Kingston upon Hull, North (Mr. McNamara) on 25 November at column181.
