HC Deb 04 December 1986 vol 106 c749W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many teachers are currently employed in Wales; and how many of them are Welsh-speaking.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

There were 27,952 teachers in full time equivalent terms in service in maintained nursery, primary, secondary and special schools at January 1986. Information on the total number who are Welsh speaking is not available.

However, a survey of secondary school teachers, carried out in 1984, revealed that nearly 4,400 or 30 per cent. of the total full-time and part-time teachers in maintained secondary schools regarded themselves as reasonably or fully fluent in oral Welsh.
