asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will consider charging a duty on all Japanese imports equivalent to the duty they charge on Scotch whisky; what estimate he has made of the resulting revenue; and if he will make a statement.

No. The European Community has launched a GATT article XXIII case against Japan on the discriminatory tax and duty treatment of imported alcoholic drinks. We are looking to the Japanese Government for urgent remedial action. If this is not forthcoming I shall press the Community to consider urgently how to pursue further its GATT rights.
