HC Deb 04 December 1986 vol 106 c725W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he is satisfied that all reasonable steps have been taken to secure the safety of drivers and passengers in the advent of an accident in the newly-completed A1(M) tunnel at Hatfield.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Yes. Day-to-day safety as well as measures for dealing quickly and effectively with a range of emergency situations have been a paramount consideration in the tunnel design. They have been the subject of extensive consultation with the police and other emergency services who recently simulated a major accident to test and get to know the operational facilities.
