asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has any plans to increase funding for research into motor neurone disease.

The research councils, which receive grants-in-aid from the Department's science budget, are the main Government agencies for the support of scientific research. They determine their own scientific priorities. Both the Medical Research Council and the Science and Engineering Research Council are funding research into motor neurone disease.
