§ Mr. Ashdownasked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what information is available to his Department on whether the USS Nathanael Greene proceeded to Holy Loch under nuclear propulsion or conventional propulsion following the recent incident in which it sustained damage; and if he will make a statement;
(2) whether the United States authorities informed his Department of any release of radioactive substances by the USS Nathanael Greene in United Kingdom waters; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. StanleyI understand that the nuclear propulsion system of the USS Nathanael Greene was not damaged in the incident on 13 March 1986; that there was no release of radioactive substances; and that the boat proceeded under nuclear power to the Holy Loch.
