HC Deb 01 December 1986 vol 106 c441W
Mr. Beith

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what plans Her Majesty's Government have for researching strategic defence initiative technologies designed specifically to provide extra protection from ballistic missile attack for the United Kingdom.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

As part of the United Kingdom's participation in the United States SDI research programme a study is currently being undertaken into the systems that would be necessary for the integrated defence of Europe within the context of a strategic defence system for the defence of the continentla United States and its Allies against ballistic missiles. This study is known as the European architecture study.

Mr. Beith

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is his latest information as to the proportion of the United States defence budget for the financial years ending 1986 and 1987 which is assigned to researching strategic defence initiative technologies designed specifically to provide extra protection from ballistic missile attack from Europe.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

The SDI research programme accounts for about 1 per cent. of the United States defence budget in fiscal years 1986 and 1987. Much of the programme would be relevant to the problem of defending Europe against ballistic missile attack as well as the United States.
