HC Deb 01 December 1986 vol 106 c463W
Mr. Thurnham

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about Government policy on intermediate range nuclear weapons.

Mr. Renton

The Alliance has consistently made it clear that agreements on INF must include equal and global limits. An agreement for the elimination of longer-range intermediate nuclear forces in Europe would have to include tight constraints on the numbers of SS20s in Soviet Asia, and on Soviet short-range INF. As in other areas of arms control, effective verification will be essential.
