HC Deb 01 December 1986 vol 106 c528W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has on what the Health Education Council is spending in the current, and planning to spend in the next, financial year on (a) smoking, (b) alcohol, (c) diet and (d) AIDS; and whether he is satisfied with the Council's current order of priorities.

Mr. Newton

As my hon. Friend will be aware, my right hon. Friend has announced that the Health Education Council is to be reconstituted as a special health authority with effect from 1 April 1987. It is envisaged that it will in due course assume responsibility for public education on AIDS, which is currently being conducted primarily by the Government themselves, and for which up to £20 million is available in the next twelve months. However, following are the figures for expenditure planned by the present Health Education Council in this financial year and the next:

1986–87 £ 1987–88 £
Smoking 1,769,000 1,504,000
Alcohol 478,000 437,000
Diet 1,000,000 2,000,000
AIDS 98,000 80,000
