HC Deb 29 April 1986 vol 96 cc378-9W
26. Mr. Peter Thurnham

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received about the operation of foetal scan systems within the National Health Service; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Whitney

The Association for Improvements in Maternity Services has expressed concern about the safety of ultrasound in the routine screening of every pregnant woman. In June 1984 the Department asked the Medical Research Council to convene a meeting of experts to consider the risks and benefits of obstetric ultrasound. The Department is considering the council's report and the need for any further action.

It remains our view that the decision to recommend an ultrasound scan is one of clinical judgment and that the reasons for all procedures and tests should be explained to each expectant mother so she has the opportunity to decline if she wishes.
