Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many employees of the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service in (a) Dyfed, (b) Powys and (c) Gwynedd are unable to converse in Welsh; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mark Robinson

The numbers of Agricultural Development and Advisory Service advisers who do not speak Welsh in Dyfed, Powys and Gwynedd respectively are 43, 28 and 11. These figures do not include veterinary investigation centres and headquarters specialist staff.

Agricultural Development and Advisory Service advisors' areas do not coincide with local authority districts. The number of Welsh speaking advisors in Dyfed, which includes the districts of Ceredigion, Pembroke and Carmarthen, is 27. The number of Welsh speaking advisors in Gwynedd, which includes the districts of Meirion, Arfon and Ynys Môn, is 23. These figures do not include veterinary investigation centres and headquarters specialist staff.
