HL Deb 17 April 1986 vol 473 c872WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

In view of their statement [H.L. Debates, 19th March 1986; col. 1039] that "these policies" (i.e. neither confirming nor denying the presence of nuclear weapons on our ships) "have to apply globally if they are to have any meaning", what is the position of Britain as a signatory to the protocol of the Treaty of Tlatelolco establishing a nuclear-free zone in South America.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Young)

We have at all times complied with our obligations under Additional Protocols I and II of the Treaty of Tlatelolco not to deploy nuclear weapons in territories for which it is internationally responsible and which lie within the treaty's zone of application. We have also carried out our obligation not to deploy nuclear weapons in areas for which the treaty is in force.
