HC Deb 10 April 1986 vol 95 c165W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he has to assist in mediation moves to seek to bring a peaceful solution to the conflict between the communities in Sri Lanka; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eggar

We have not been asked, neither would we wish, to become involved in Sri Lanka's internal problems. But we fully support any efforts which encourage direct talks between the Sri Lankan Government and representatives of the Tamil separatist movements. We have continued to make clear to all the parties involved that a negotiated settlement offers the best route to lasting peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka.
