HC Deb 10 April 1986 vol 95 cc164-5W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had with representatives of other states concerning the situation in Afghanistan; if he has any plans aimed at seeking to bring about an end to foreign interference in the internal affairs of that country; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eggar

My right hon. and learned Friend has frequent and detailed discussions about the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan with our European Community partners and NATO allies and with many other countries. Most recently he discussed the subject in depth with the Government of Pakistan during his recent visit there. My right hon. and learned Friend made clear to them that we fully support their firm and principled stand and the hospitality and help they are providing to the Afghan refugees who have sought refuge in their country. We are in full agreement that the key to peace in Afghanistan is the withdrawal of Soviet troops. To that end we fully support the United Nations Secretary General's efforts to find a solution on the basis of the principles set out in successive United Nations resolutions.
