HL Deb 14 October 1985 vol 467 c462WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why, as UN Resolutions to which they arc party prohibit the use or threatened use of nuclear weapons, they continue to threaten to use them, and whether they will detail the circumstances in which they would carry out the threat.

Baroness Young

We have not supported any resolutions passed by the United Nations deneral Assembly (which are not in any event obligatory) which prohibit the use or threatened use of nuclear weapons; and the United Nations Security Council has not passed any resolutions in this sense. With regard to the second part of his question, I would refer the noble Lord to the reply given by my noble friend Lord Trefgarne, the then Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces, to the noble Lord. Lord Beswick on 7th March (cols. 1441–3).
