HL Deb 21 November 1985 vol 468 c724WA
Lord Bethell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many persons were convicted of a drug-related offence as a result of being apprehended at a port of entry into or out of the United Kingdom during each of the years 1981–84 and how many persons were convicted of drugs-related offences overall in each of these years.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Glenarthur)

Details of the place at which offenders are apprehended are not collected centrally. However, information on the numbers of people found guilty of various types of offence under drugs legislation or of other offences involving controlled drugs in the years 1981 to 1984 is published in Table 8 ofStatistics of the Misuse of Drugs in the United Kingdom, 1984 (Home Office Statistical Bulletin 23/85) and the table includes separate figures on the numbers found guilty of offences of unlawful import or export of controlled drugs. As that table shows, findings of guilt for all drugs offences totalled 17,700 in 1981, 19,800 in 1982, 22,200 in 1983 and 22,900 in 1984.
