Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what information he has concerning the number of schools in England and Wales that were built within the last 10 years; which are between 10 and 50 years old; and which are between 50 and 80 years old, or are over 80 years old;

(2) what information he has concerning the number of schools in the north-west region that were built within the last 10 years; which are between 10 and 50 years old; and which are between 50 and 80 years old, or are over 80 years old.

Mr. Dunn

Information in the form requested is not held centrally. However, in the 10 year period 1975–76 to 1984–85 approval was given to 1,074 major building projects for the provision of new or replacement maintained schools in England, including 129 in the north-west region. Figures to cover the earlier periods are not available. Schools in Wales are the concern of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
