§ Mr. Kirkwoodasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will reconsider the scheme to charge overseas students full rates for academic courses taken in the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. BrookeNo. There is no reason why the taxpayer should subsidise all overseas students. The Government are committed instead to a policy of targeted support related to the needs of particular overseas countries and to British policy objectives. In 1984–85 over 16,000 students were supported at a cost of over £70 million.
