HC Deb 22 May 1985 vol 79 c477W
Mr. Stephen

Ross asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether the pilot study of bridges, to assess the probable cost of strengthening necessary for the heaviest lorries, is now complete; when a nationwide bridge survey will begin; and when he proposes that strengthening work should start.

Mrs. Chalker

The sample survey which is investigating the implications of applying the new assessment code to bridges owned by local authorities and the other major public bodies is expected to be completed by the end of 1985. No decisions regarding any ensuing nationwide bridge survey and strengthening programme will be made until the results are available and have been considered by the various bridge owners.
