HC Deb 20 May 1985 vol 79 c314W
Mr. Ottaway

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement about the circumstances surrounding the release from custody of Mr. Lionel Clarke on 8 May.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

On 8 May at Nottingham magistrates' court Mr. Clarke was found guilty of damage to property and assault, and sentenced to 28 days' imprisonment. In view of the time he had already spent on remand he was not required to be returned to prison, but was released into the community. Since then it has been found necessary to detain Mr. Clarke in hospital for treatment under the provisions of the Mental Health Act 1983. Following admission to Mapperley hospital our Department agreed to make a place available for him at Rampton hospital.
