Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish in the Official Report the equivalent tables for Wales of Table 3:10:2 and Table 3:10:3 in the Government's expenditure White paper (Cmnd. 9428).

Information for Wales, directly comparable with that presented for England in table 3:10:2 of The Government's Expenditure Plans 1985–86 to 1987–88, is not readily available. The following estimates, however, may be compared.

Notes:

1. Pupils numbers are as at January in the relevant academic year.

2. The under fives and special school pupil numbers include those attending part-time. Such children are counted as only 0.5 for the purpose of calculating pupil-teacher ratios.

3. Participation rates for under fives express the number of children under five in nursery and primary schools, part-time or full-time, as a percentage of three and four year olds in the population.

4. The over school leaving age participation rate expresses the number of secondary pupils over school leaving age as a percentage of the 16 and 17 year old population.

5. The numbers of teachers given include all teaching staff, whether in school or not (e.g. because they are on courses of in-service training) and count part-time employees according to their full-time equivalence. Pupil teacher ratios derived from this total, as shown in the table, are not a measure of pupil-teacher ratios in schools.
