asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will now allocate additional resources to health authorities in the north of England to pay for smear testing for cancer of the cervix; and if he will make a statement.

We have distributed narly £500 million additional cash to health authorities in England in 1985–86. The Northern regional health authority received an additional £33 million. It is for authorities to determine how this is to be used in accordance with the Government's priorities for service development.
