HC Deb 01 May 1985 vol 78 c167W
Sir David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will make representations to the West German Government to persuade them to remove their restrictions upon the freedom of British insurance companies to trade in the Federal Republic contrary to the spirit of the second directive on non-life insurance.

Mr. Fletcher

We take every opportunity to press for progress towards a free Community market for non-life insurance services business and I went to Bonn in February specifically for discussions on this point with the Ministry of Finance. We are also intervening in support of the Commission of the European Communities in a case which it is bringing against Germany in the European Court of Justice about certain provisions of German insurance law which the Commission considers contravene the freedom of services provisions of the EEC treaty.
