HC Deb 25 March 1985 vol 76 c25W
21. Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what his Department has done to support the Welsh language since 1979.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

In a speech in 1980 my right hon. Friend undertook that while there were people who want to speak the Welsh language the Government would respond with the means of supporting it and giving it strength. That promise has been kept. Support since 1979 has amounted to £8.5 million and a further £2.5 million is planned for the next financial year, enabling a variety of bodies to undertake practical and constructive projects in the Welsh language field. It is a level of support of which we are proud and from my regular contact with bodies in receipt of grant is, I know, widely appreciated.
