HC Deb 25 March 1985 vol 76 c31W
Rev. William McCrea

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons have been released in converted terrorist supergrass trial cases in the Province.

Mr. Scott

Ninety-nine persons have been acquitted since 1982 following trials or appeals in cases where the evidence of a former accomplice was presented on behalf of the Crown. Information on how many of these were released on their acquittal could be obtained only at a disproportionate cost.

Rev. William McCrea

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) if he will name those convicted and imprisoned because of evidence given by converted terrorists;

(2) if he will name those persons convicted on evidence of converted terrorists and the appropriate sentences passed on them.

Mr. Scott

No. It would not be appropriate to give the names of individuals in this connection.
