HC Deb 25 March 1985 vol 76 cc30-1W
Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make arrangements to collect information on the average length of time taken by motor cyclists between passing part one and taking or passing part two of the driving test.

Mrs. Lynda Chalker

No. The average length of time between a motor cyclist passing part one and taking part two will not, in practice differ markedly from the average wait for part two of the test. This is similar to that for L tests for which figures are readily available. The additional cost of collecting these further data could not be justified.

Traffic area offices, who book the tests, already aim to ensure that motor cyclists who are reaching the end of the two-year period on their provisional licence are offered early test appointments within the period remaining.

Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make arrangements to collect information on the number and proportion of motor cycle provisional licences issued from 1 October 1982 which have been (a) replaced by a full licence and (b) allowed to lapse.

Mr. Michael Spicer

The range of statistical information available from drivers' records held on DVLC's computers at Swansea is to be reviewed. A study will begin, later this year, when work on replacing obsolete equipment at the centre is sufficiently advanced. It will include consideration of the information requested.
