HC Deb 25 March 1985 vol 76 c26W
Sir Raymond Gower

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will state the total of new jobs created in Wales since 1979; how many of these jobs were in manufacturing and how many in service industries; and how many in industries connected with modern technology.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Comprehensive information on jobs created is not available. However, since 1 May 1979 projects for which offers of selective financial assistance were accepted, or which were allocated Government-financed factories, promised to provide over 72,000 jobs. A split between manufacturing and service sectors is not readily available, but just over 11,000 jobs relate to projects in the fields of telecommunications, radio, electronics and aerospace industries. These figures do not include all the self-employed or jobs not involving selective financial assistance or Government factories.
